Save Money with the Right Thermostat Settings

Tuesday, June 17, 2014

Smart thermostat settings can save you cash.If you've made the effort to cut costs by installing a ductless heat pump, be sure to maximize savings by considering targeted thermostat settings to minimize wasted energy. At the same time, you can benefit from a more stable indoor environment.

Recommended Thermostat Settings for Summer

The U.S. government’s ENERGY STAR program recommends the following guidelines for summer thermostat settings:

  • 6 a.m. - waking setpoint of 78 degrees or higher for cooling season
  • 8 a.m. - daytime setting increase of 7 degrees
  • 6 p.m. - evening return to waking setpoint
  • 10 p.m. - night setting increase of 4 degrees

You can make adjustments to fit current weather conditions, your schedule and your family’s preferences, but keep in mind that random settings will result in unpredictable bills.

The Power of Custom Control

Because each indoor unit of your ductless multi-split can be programmed independently of others, you can make general adjustments for the entire household. As an individual with unique preferences makes changes to one unit, the remaining units can continue without disruption in their programming. The entire home's comfort control isn't taken hostage by one person's desire for ice-cold conditions.

This is also a huge benefit if you have spaces that are vacant for extended periods. You can make more significant changes to these thermostat settings to conserve energy, reverting to the whole-home plan when the area is in use. The more carefully you plan your system's setting changes, the more control you can maintain over your energy bills.

Still Thinking About Ductless Air Conditioning?

If you haven't made up your mind about going ductless, you may want to consider additional sources of savings. Ducts typically represent at least 20 percent of the cooling energy used in a home, and leaks can cause that amount to double. This can be a huge source of savings as you transition to a ductless system.
