Archaeologists who have explored the Icehouse Bottom site a few miles southwest of Greenback agree that native peoples first inhabited the land along the Little Tennessee River as early as 9,000 years ago. When the first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 18th century, they encountered the Overhill Cherokee, who depended upon the river for survival. In 1794, the European settlers opened the Tellico Blockhouse. This fort served as protection for pioneers and later became a trading post to help facilitate exchange between the Cherokee and new settlers. By the late 19th century, the town had attracted the L&N Railroad, which helped to establish a tourist economy in the region that is still going strong today.
