Maryville, TN Contractors

History

In 1785, Fort Craig was constructed along Pistol Creek to protect settlers from a Cherokee attack. Named for Captain John Craig, a Revolutionary War hero, the fort was located at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains, and the area had long been home to generations of Native Americans. Part of the Great Indian Warpath once followed the same route as present-day U.S. Route 411. Captain Craig donated land near the fort for the establishment of a permanent settlement, and the new town was called Maryville. Named after Mary Blount, whose husband, William, was governor of Tennessee, Maryville was officially founded on July 11, 1795.

One of the town's early settlers was Sam Houston, who helped construct a one-room schoolhouse for the city's children. Houston taught there prior to enlisting in the army during the War of 1812 and beginning his illustrious career as a soldier and statesman. The Southern and Western Theological Seminary was established in 1819 and later became Maryville College. The area was home to a large Quaker community, and there was also a lot of abolitionist activity. During the Civil War, the majority of Maryville's citizens were Union sympathizers, but the city was not in Union hands until later in the war. Many buildings were destroyed by a fire that was set by Confederate troops in an attempt to expel Union soldiers from their hiding place in the local courthouse.

Today, Maryville is known for its high quality of life and small-town charm. It is the county seat of Blount County, and the downtown area has undergone a revival. Additionally, the city is close to a number of popular tourist attractions.
