Why Choose a Ductless Air Conditioning System

Ductless split system air conditioners are used extensively for central heating and cooling applications in many global markets, including Europe and Southeast Asia. While searching for economical solutions to a variety of air conditioning challenges, many U.S. consumers have become increasingly aware of the numerous benefits provided by ductless technology.

The Ductless Difference

Conventional central air conditioning systems are complicated, cumbersome and inflexible. In many instances, the output at the air handler is substantially higher than the output at the register. A poorly designed air distribution network can significantly degrade the performance of the system through leakage, contamination or improper sizing.

In contrast, a ductless mini split does not require an inefficient pathway to deliver conditioned air into a single room or an entire building. Every system is a self-contained, ultra quiet air conditioner unit. An attractive indoor air handler enclosure can be installed in the ceiling or hung on an interior wall. A separate condenser is set outdoors and positioned so that any residual fan noise will not be heard inside.

Ductless mini splits provide architects and engineers with the flexibility to design building interiors without the limitations imposed by soffits and other duct-related obstructions. By strategically positioning fan coil units to meet the system load, homeowners are provided with point of use cooling and heating. Eliminating the ductwork grid will improve comfort, reduce air noise and lower annual utility costs.

  • Effective in Low Temperatures: Ductless heat pumps include reversing valve technology to deliver warm comfort in temperatures down to 14 degrees Celsius. For areas that experience more extreme weather conditions, a qualified heating and cooling contractor can install a supplemental electric heat strip.
  • Quiet Comfort and Control: Since ductless systems operate at reduced velocities, they produce lower levels of operational noise across all frequencies when compared to traditional HVAC systems. Homeowners appreciate a low-profile air conditioner for bedroom, den and game room use.

In a multi-zone configuration, several indoor air handlers can operate off a single condenser. Every indoor unit is controlled by a separate handheld remote, so the user can tailor the temperature of each room to their own personal preference.

  • Better Air Quality: Over time, ductwork in a conventional HVAC system accumulates debris, dirt and other contaminants. When the blower engages, the pollutants are recycled and deposited into the various rooms in the living area where they can irritate allergies and other respiratory conditions. This can eliminate the need for expensive structural changes and associated drywall repairs. Indoor fan coil units only require a single 3 inch hole cut through an exterior wall to accommodate the connections for the condensing unit.
  • Ideally Suited for Retrofit: Installing a traditional HVAC system in an older building with thick walls is costly and often impractical. In a ductless configuration, the outdoor condenser and indoor fan coil can be located up to 50 feet away without a measurable loss of efficiency. Condensing units are relatively small and can be positioned in areas where they will operate quietly and inconspicuously.
  • Tax Credits: The current energy efficient air conditioner tax credit program allows homeowners to claim a federal tax credit up to 10 percent of the total cost of qualifying ductless splits systems installed by December 31, 2013.

The maximum tax credit for HVAC equipment is $300, but a total tax credit of $500 can be claimed when used in conjunction with other qualifying energy efficient products.
