How Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioners Work

Ductless mini-split air conditioners are redesigned split systems that utilize a flexible conduit to connect the outside compressor/condenser to indoor air handlers. The conduit contains all of the necessary power supply, refrigerant tubing and condensate suction which makes ductless cooling possible.

The discreet conduit is typically installed inside walls and other hidden interior spaces, requiring only a small hole through the drywall of interior walls or ceilings, or hung flush in hang ceilings to connect to the air handler(s). Also, the conduit needs just a small hole in your home's shell to run the conduit to the compressor/condenser unit.

The air handlers, which contain the evaporator coil, are typically mounted on walls, ceilings or floors, depending on each situation in regards to conserving living space and promoting optimal airflow. The sleek air handlers cool air in the same manner as a conventional air conditioner, except that since the air handlers are installed in the rooms or spaces which need to be cooled, ductwork is not needed to channel airflow. The air already contained in the room or area is cooled, so there is no loss of heat energy often associated with poor duct design.

To cool a room or area, the air handler pulls airflow across the evaporator coil, which induces heat extraction and moisture removal from the air. Cooled air is evenly circulated to the living space, and moisture condenses on the coil and drains through the condensate line. The refrigerant flows to the compressor in preparation for heat release at the condenser.

Ductless Zoning Control

Each air handler provides separate temperature control for customized cooling to the specific zone (room or area). This is one of the great benefits of ductless mini-split air conditioners, and makes these systems the ideal cooling solution for many situations.
