It Is Possible to Lower Your Ductless Heating Bills -- Here's How

Driving Ductless Performance

The ability of your ductless system to provide maximum efficiency and lower heating bills hinges on regular maintenance, both professional and easy do-it-yourself tasks, and winterizing your home. While regular maintenance is an important ingredient for boosting the performance of any home-comfort system, winterizing your home has special significance for ductless systems.

Unlike a furnace that uses combustion to produce heat, a ductless system uses refrigeration principles (like conventional heat pumps) to extract heat-energy from the air in one location, and move and release the heat energy at another location. This means that ductless heating efficiency is affected by both the temperature outside your home and your home's rate of heat loss, which is the heating load placed on your ductless system.

Lower Heating Load, Lower Heating Bills

Winterizing your home is the process of implementing measures which inhibit air transfer and heat-energy conduction between the living spaces of your home and the areas outside the insulation barrier. Sealing air leaks and boosting insulation slows your home's heat-loss rate, which lowers the heating load placed on the ductless system and delivers lower heating bills for you.

Winterizing your home is one of the most cost-effective ways to save energy and lower heating bills for the life of your home. The materials needed to button up your home -- caulk, foam weatherstripping, expanding spray foam, gaskets and insulation rolls and batts -- are commonly found at your local hardware store. However, the tasks of locating air leaks and insulation deficiencies are best left to your HVAC professional using specialized equipment.

A blower door test is used to pinpoint the tiniest cracks, gaps and holes throughout your home. These are common areas for air leaks and the proper remedy:

  • Gaps around exterior doors may be sealed with foam weatherstripping. A draft blocker may be installed at the foot of exterior doorways.
  • Caulk may be used to seal gaps and cracks around windows. Caulk is available in an assortment of colors and types, including squeeze tubes, caulk cartridges and caulk rope.
  • Expanding spray foam is excellent for use around pipes, wiring, flue, recessed lighting and other apertures through the home’s shell and inside the attic.
  • The attic hatch or access door may be sealed with weatherstripping. Sealing the attic hatch helps keep heat inside the living spaces, and it also helps protect the roof from ice dams.
  • Foam gaskets should be installed behind outlets and switch plates to prevent heating dollars being sucked into the walls.
  • Attached garages should be inspected for air leaks, too. This helps boost ductless performance, which drives lower heating bills, but it also helps prevent harmful contaminants, such as carbon monoxide (CO) and benzene, from leaking into your home.

Infrared video and imaging are used to locate heat-energy losses through the home’s shell. Heat-energy losses indicate areas which need additional insulation, or areas which have no insulation at all. Attic insulation should be inspected for damage, such as mold, tears and fallen insulation strips.

A small hole may need to be drilled into walls to check whether insulation is present and in what quantities. Insulation spray foam is an excellent option for adding insulation inside walls.

If you receive snowfall in your region, it's important to keep an eye on the outside unit to maintain free airflow. Snow and ice accumulation can block airflow to the condenser coil, which increases electricity consumption and can cause ice to accumulate on the coil.
